Singers' Remedies

Lemon. Honey. Lemon and honey. Tea. Tea and honey. Where do you think these things are going when you swallow them? They travel down your esophagus and into your stomach. So do lozenges, as they dissolve. You might get some soothing feeling fumes, but if you are not choking on it, it probably isn't making it to your vocal cords. Let's stop kidding ourselves. Find an anatomy chart and take a look. There are two big tubes inside your neck, which are the trachea (wind pipe) and the esophagus (food and drink pipe). Your vocal cords are below the opening of the trachea (the epiglottis), NOT in your esophagus.

Most sprays may get to the pharynx but not to the larynx. Asthma inhalers are the exception but ask your doctor for help when your voice hurts or your throat hurts. The pharynx is the throat above the larynx and esophagus. You might feel some soothing sensation there from a spray but then you will swallow it. See your doctor when your throat is sore.

Don't sing if your throat hurts. Think about it. If it is irritated, then it may be in a weakened or injured or more vulnerable state. Have you heard of a concert being cancelled? It's better to cancel one and get well instead of causing a serious injury which could take weeks or months to heal.

This voice teacher will NOT recommend or sell products with which to treat yourself. If you have abused and injured your voice from screaming, yelling, singing incorrectly, then stop the abuse and get trained and get serious. If you are ill, see a doctor and get helped. If you haven't had vocal nodules then you do not know how upsetting that is to have to take time off from singing for weeks or months. If you don't get trained, the nodules will most likely return (even in the same location) unless your bad vocal habits are corrected.

Take proper care of yourself and be proactive with rest, exercise, and nutrients, as approved by your doctor. Safe and effective singing lessons can greatly help with your singing endurance. I have sung six hours a night, six nights a week with NO problems in endurance, tone and with NO hoarseness
