Singing is an art! We could say that singing can be an
art. We could say that there is great art, good art, fair art, and bad art. Bad art may not be art at all.
Technique
has a lot to do with art. It can contribute to the beauty of it, or when lacking, can detract from it,
What
is more important, technique or art? When done well, it is a seamless looking activity. When done at a level of greatness,
the art transcends the technique. It goes beyond mere technical perfection. An example that comes to mind was one when seeing
Mikhail Barishnikov perform live. The other male dancers were superb but words cannot be found to express why he looked so
much better than the other dancers. Try to find a video of Barishnikov and observe for yourself.
You, as a singer,
want your technique to be SO good that it never impedes your artistic expression.
Josh Groban, Linda Eder, Gino
Vanelli, Andrea Bocelli, Alicia Keys, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, and a few hundred other singers in several styles sing artistically.
These are not necessarily my favorite singers but are definitely among them. Who do you like and why? Look for my upcoming
blog regarding favorite singers...stay tuned!
